Today we celebrate the International Coastal Cleanup Day and encourages companies and people to contribute and spread awareness about preserving and protecting the world’s oceans and waterways.
International Coastal Cleanup Day (ICCD) is one of the world's largest annual preservation and protection events and volunteer efforts for our ocean and beaches. Costal cleanup day was established by the Ocean Conservancy on the west coast of Washington state in the US in 1986, and have expanded to over 100 countries participating. Each year the day is celebrated on the third Saturday of September.
Since the beginning, more than 12 million volunteers have collected nearly 100 million tons of litter from the world’s coastlines.
Proper handling and preservation of waste is very important to SAR. We work every day to create more sustainable waste solutions for our customers and partners. To contribute to the International Coastal Cleanup Day, we have registered at ryddenorge.no and our department in Florø has registered as a pick up location. This means that the public can pick up bags and gloves (between 08-15.30 on weekdays), and the collected waste can be delivered to our Florø location for further sorting and handling.
Why costal cleanup?
The biggest threat to marine life is plastic. In 2019 it was estimated that there were already over 150 million tons of plastic polluting the worlds oceans and growing at least 9.1 million tons more each year.
With more awareness and an effort, both from onshore and offshore, we can together contribute and spread awareness about preserving and protecting the world’s oceans and waterways.

How can you make a difference?
The most important thing is to do something. Some ways to make an impact can be to
- Supporting organizations participating in coastal cleanups
- Help raise awareness to the problem. E.g by sharing articles on social media
- Take initiative yourself, invite your friends, family, local community to participate in collecting trash from your closest coast if you live nearby.
- Making sure you recycle and throw away your litter in the correct bin.
Companies can also participate. This can be done through having good routines on Waste Management and focusing on sustainability in their operations.
SAR offer consulting services within HSE, waste management and environment. We help customers to prevent waste from occurring, improve source sorting and grow waste recycling.
We actively contribute to our customers with the best environmentally friendly solutions to utilize resources in the best possible way and create new products.
We also offer courses to promote eco-friendly and cost-effective Waste Chain Management™ throughout the value chain.
